The Munter hitch, a.k.a. the half hitch or Italian hitch, is a simple knot that can be used for belaying and should be in every climber`s bag of tricks. HMS is an abbreviation for the German term Halbmastwurfsicherung, meaning half hitch belay. HMS locking carabiners all feature a wide and smooth-radius basket to allow a Munter Hitch to flip through.
