These insightful words by the French explorer, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, praising the simple perfection of his airplane, speak eloquently to the thinking behind the new MaxCams. The extraordinary 2:1 expansion range is achieved, not though complex and weighty engineering, but through out-of-the-box thinking and focused design. The result is a set of simple and lightweight cams that will feel at home in your hands from the first trigger pull.

The Holy Grail of cam design has always been to find the ultimate blend of simplicity, strength, expansion range and weight. It`s relatively easy to make a cam with expanded range if you don`t care about weight or complexity, and it`s easy to make a lightweight cam if you don`t care about strength. It`s extraordinary difficult, however, to achieve a good blend of these characteristics and still end up with a cam that`s intuitive and easy to use. Trango achieved this by floating the axles of the outer pair of cams on the inner pair. As the lobes are retracted, the axles of the outer cams move inward, increasing their range.

While extended range may allow you to carry fewer cams on a route, the big benefit is the versatility the larger range offers up. You can eliminate the need for `offsets` - the extended range of the MaxCam takes care of this for you. And you can carry fewer sizes: one tester was heard to quote, `You can do any 5.10 or .11 at Indian Creek with just the two and the three.` Climbing in areas where it`s not so splitter? Any given size of MaxCam that you pull off you rack is much more likely to fit because of its extended range. NOTE: As with all cams, be sure to place them in the smaller half of their expansion range. If a cam is placed in the upper end of its range it is very likely to tip out or walk into a bad location if it walks.
