G. LOOMIS GL2 9` 6 Wt Evergreen Fly Rod
Ten years ago, a nine-foot six-weight was the standard for western trout anglers. As rod materials have improved and rods have become lighter and stronger, the #6 has taken a back seat to the 5-weight. It`s now the `in between` size for the transition from trout fishing to warmwater species. Capable of remarkably long casts, the 1086 also has the ability to make delicate presentations - especially in windy conditions where a #5 can`t quite handle it. This is a good streamer rod, and it admirably casts the oversized, wind-resistant poppers, stoneflies and hoppers so popular on the larger streams of the high desert. It`s also an excellent rod for ultralight saltwater applications on the flats, going after bonefish and small mangrove snapper. The GL2 fly rod is a progressive taper rod that`s tough, yet loads easily and smoothly.
It`s sometimes recommended that less experienced fly anglers use a line one weight heavier than normal to make their rod easier to cast. G-Loomis feels a rod should be easy to cast, right from the start, with the line for which it`s designed. And that`s what you`ll experience with G-Loomis` GL2s. Because they are designed to be smooth and easy to cast from the get-go, the GL2s load easily with their rated line size, especially the shorter-belly introductory fly lines. They feel great whether you`re making short or long casts thanks to the Progressive Power taper. And their medium-soft feel, combined with a fast action, allows them to generate plenty of line speed, as well as nice, clean line loops. The GL2s are quite light, yet extremely durable-another bonus during those first forays into the fly world. If you`re just beginning to become addicted to fly fishing, or you want a precision graphite rod for occasional use, you can`t go wrong with a GL2.
