Gore-Tex XCR Fabric
The Gore-Tex membrane is completely impervious to rain, sleet and snow, while allowing perspiration to pass through it. A single square inch of the Gore-Tex membrane contains 9 billion microscopic pores - each pore is 20,000 times smaller than a raindrop but 700 times larger than a molecule of water vapor - so while water can`t pass through the fabric, perspiration can.
The North Face uses Gore-Tex fabric in shoes, not only because of its waterproof / breathable capabilities, but because it is rigorously tested for durability. Abrasion and flexing tests are done in laboratory conditions that exceed even the most extreme weather environments. Perched on the cutting edge of technology, The North Face introduces Gore-Tex XCR fabric, a revolution in breathable fabrics. Designed in conjunction with W.L. Gore and Associates, Inc., Gore-Tex XCR fabric (extended comfort range) is durable, waterproof, windproof, and extremely breathable. The bottom line: unparalleled comfort. Gore-Tex XCR fabric increases the breathability of your footwear without compromising waterproofness or adding weight.
Snake Plate
For too long, outdoor athletes have shared one lament: a forefoot plate protects the foot, but there are endeavors that call for a greater feel for the trail. Can`t protection and flexibility peacfully coexist?
Protection and flexibility in a single shoe.
Now, finally, they can, and The North Face Snake Plate makes it possible. The patent-pending Snake Plate consists of a forefoot plate that winds back and forth between the medial and lateral sides of the foot. Because it is not one solid element, it is not as uncompromisingly rigin from side to side and front to back. The result is a forefoot plate that allows the foot to do what it is physiologically designed to do: flex, bend, and contort to changing terrain. At the same time, the Snake Plate delivers rigidity where and when it is still needed.
The thickness, composition and size of the Snake Plate varies from style to style as appropriate. For example, a thicker, more rigid Snake Plate addresses the technical, ever-changing demands of a mountain run. A thinner, more flexible Snake Plate reconciles flexibility with a decreased demand for protection while on smoother dirt paths.
On the trails, The North Face Snake Plate ushers in a futuristic new era where underfoot protection and forefoot flexibility are no longer an odd couple.
Northotic Footbed
The Northotic ergonomically designed footbed takes a footwear element normally relegated as an afterthought and infuses it with performance features. The shoe insert may seem trivial - in fact, some inserts are the performance equivalent of corrugated cardboard - but it holds the potential to enhance the athletic experience. The North Face has taken the insert and elevated it to a superior-performance, multi-density footbed with enhanced stability, support, and cushioning.
Tenacious Grip
A high abrasion-resistant sticky rubber designed to perform in the wet and dry for excellent traction and durability.
NorthFit
The mission of NorthFit is to scientifically outfit the outdoor athlete with the most precise fit between the human foot and a footwear last, as they both relate to the demands of the activity. The North Face partners with English shoemakers with experience totaling hundreds of years to craft and create last shapes. We also continuously collaborate with The North Face athletes, collecting and applying their feedback from epic expeditions and training sessions. Finally, The North Face consults with labs and think tanks to ensure that the most reliable, quantifiable data and recent studies are taken into account. This includes three-dimensional foot modeling, measurements of virtually every curvature of the foot, including widths of joints, heights of cones, and calcaneus angles.
Scientifically outfitting the outdoor athlete with the most precise fit.
Mountains of data go into each NorthFit implementation. For example, research has found that the human foot can expand and swell up to two centimeters over the course of a long run, so our shoemakers have adjusted for a larger toe box in our endurance running shoes. By the same token, a morphology study of almost 900 men and women revealed no differences in foot length measurements relative to sex, but it did reveal a statistically significant difference in ball and heel width, instep height, and width. As a result, The North Face women`s footwear has a proportionately unique build from that for men. In this way, the outdoor athlete can rest assured and focus on the task at hand, knowing that the most up-to-date scientific data and historical learnings have delivered comfort and performance that is certifiably NorthFit.
